Park Güell: iconic park in Barcelona

Park Güell. What more can we say about it? It has been the item of various chapters in tourist guides, even the subject of books on its own and is one of the many masterpieces of Gaudi. It has become a victim of its own popularity, being visited by millions of visitors, which for local citizens often feels as too much, and for travelers as well.

But it stays a remarkable park, with the historic part (that isn’t that big) and the natural part. The historic part is definitely interesting and a must see. But if you’re up for some quietness while visiting, try to go in the late evening and during weekdays. An extra tip, in Park Güell various picnic-tables are spread out. While many visitors never thought of bringing a picnic, they are almost always empty, although they provide an amazing picnic-experience with great views on Barcelona. Going to the back of Park Güell (in the opposite side of the historic part) will bring more calmness, and it’s here that Park Güell also interconnects with other parks (such as Parc del Guinardo) which has a similar landscape but no tourists.

An important tip for those on a budget: since a few years now the historic part (but not all other parts of the park!) comes with an entrance fee. If you don’t want to pay this, but do want to visit the historic part of the park, go around sunset or dawn, which is the time that the full park is for free. On top of that it will be much more relaxed and calm (such as local people coming to play with their dogs), and you won’t have the views in full day-light, but we promise you that the night views aren’t bad at all either. And you’ll have much less people to share the view with :)

As a last tip to make your visit to Park Güell more relaxed and sustainable we suggest to make a detour via the neighbourhood of Gracia and have a drink at one of the nice cafes on the plenty of cute squares Gracia has to offer. The metrostation Fontana or Passeig de Gracia can equally bring you back to the centre, but at least you’ll have encountered some local life.

Enjoy your trip to Güell!
