De Frietketel: one of Belgium’s best and innovative frituurs

One thing you really have to do (regularly) on any visit to Belgium is to try some Belgian fries in a real frituur (a frituur is the kind of snackbar that focuses on fries and some accompanying snacks). Yes, fries are certainly not French, they are Belgian! Almost every Belgian has its preferred frituur, and there are a range of procedures, one could call them secrets, on how to create the unique taste of Belgian fries. One of the secrets we give away: you have to bake them in two times. For the rest, you’ll have to talk with some Belgians, like the people from de Frietketel, who are doing a terrific job with their frituur.

First of all, the fries are delicious. The secret behind this is unknown, but the plant-based oil used to bake the fries might be a tip! De Frietketel is known to do a whole lot of home-made cooking for the snacks they provide, which is a difference one can taste. Next to that, their range of vegetarian and vegan snacks is much larger than at other frituurs, almost equaling the ones that contain meat. Vegan sauces are available as well.

It shows that De Frietketel cares about sustainability. Drinks are a bit different and from more independent companies (like the Fritz Kola from Hamburg), and a sticker on the window shows their local commitment and engagement (a big yes to the plan to make Ghent more pedestrian friendly, which is a big issue at the moment in this city). De Frietketel does a great job, no surprise the place is often packed with people. Not to be missed!
